REPAIRING AND RESTORING A GOLDFISH POOL

Today I will be repairing and restoring a pump and filter system for a clients goldfish pool. The client had recently purchased this property and it has a large above ground goldfish pool. Currently the pump is not working and the biological filter is in bad shape. I will have to replace the pump but on the biological filter I will clean and refurbish in order to save the client several hundred dollars.

The project will get the filter working again and help to clear out the water. Also the previous owner had an under sized pump in the skimmer to begin with so I will be upgrading the pump size as well. The job is a fairly easy one and could be tackled in a few hours by most home owners. The importance is that the skimmer is there to help remove dust, leaves and foreign debris which may land on the pools surface. The pump below it helps to draw in the water bring this material into a net. The water is returned to the pool through the biological filter which will help to remove algae and nitrates as well as other l bacteria harmful to the balance of the pond skimmer . Much like the way a swimming pool filter would work.

I will show you in how to replace these elements and get the pool up and running again.

Well everything went relatively well with the repair of the goldfish pool. I had pulled out and removed the old pump. Instead of the same size I upgraded it in order to meet the pool size.

Old Pump

Old Pump Removed And Ready For Replacement

The pump had burned out but was only 2400 gallons per hour not enough for that size pool. The previous owner had been running it with out a screen which allowed it to suck in debris and led to it’s demise. The new pump will not have that problem as it is actually sitting inside a protective screener .

Here is another shot of the pump with the protective basket filter snapped into place.

With The Protective Basket Filter Closed Pump Is More Protected!

This pump pushes 3800 gallons per hour but it is a much better fit with this size goldfish pool. It will help to filter the water better as it flows through the biological filter and help to keep the water clear and remove gases. It is very important for the health of your goldfish pool or goldfish pond that the submersible pump is big enough to handle the water change need to keep the water balanced and filtered.

Also I set the skimmer up to work properly with a basket and a filter mat above the pump to make the debris removal a lot easier and extend the life of the pump.

If You Can Look Close You Will See The Leaf Basket To The Right Of PVC Pipe

If a pond or pool is set up properly with the right equipment maintenance is not to big a chore. The biggest problem I run into with homeowner installed ponds and pool is that they try to save money on the equipment by undersizing then they end up getting frustrated trying to get everything in balance. Either they give up or they have to spend a lot of time and money on adding chemicals.

Pond Before Pump And Skimmer Was Running

Leaves Quickly Collect On Surface If Skimmer Is Not Running

When your system is running properly the pool will look a whole lot better. It will also make Spring maintenance a lot easier. After the pump was in operation it quickly eliminated the leaf problem on the surface.

This was just the beginning of this project for the new homeowner. Now that he has the pool in operation he will be able to tweak and change things to his liking. Adding more rocks around the falls will help to camouflage the biological filter. A little landscaping will hide the power supply and wiring.
